Windows 10 and 11 include winget, Microsoft’s command-line package manager, and gnuplot is published in its repository under the package ID gnuplot.gnuplot. One command installs it: winget install -e --id gnuplot.gnuplot. No browser download and no installer wizard.
Step-by-Step
- Open Windows Terminal or PowerShell. winget is preinstalled on current Windows 11 and recent Windows 10 builds.
- (Optional) Confirm the package first:
winget search gnuplotThe results list gnuplot with the ID
gnuplot.gnuplotfrom the winget source. Confirming the ID before installing protects you from similarly named packages. - Install with an exact ID match:
winget install -e --id gnuplot.gnuplotThe
-eflag requires an exact match, so there is no ambiguity about which package you get. winget downloads the gnuplot installer from the package’s registered source and runs it silently. - Open a new terminal tab so the updated PATH is loaded.
- Verify:
gnuplot --version
Updating and Removing
winget upgrade gnuplot.gnuplot
winget uninstall gnuplot.gnuplot
Note that the winget repository sometimes trails the newest SourceForge release by a short while. If you need exactly 6.0.5 today, use the installer route in our Windows install guide — all packages are listed on the download page.
Common Pitfalls
- “winget is not recognized”: your Windows build predates winget or the App Installer package is missing. Install or update App Installer from the Microsoft Store, then retry.
- Multiple matches or unexpected publisher: always install by exact ID (
-e --id gnuplot.gnuplot) instead of a bare name, and cross-check withwinget show gnuplot.gnuplotbefore confirming.
Something not working? Run through the verification checklist to separate a PATH problem from an install problem.
